"The following list includes about 600 items which comprise all or nearly all the library that Joyce left behind in Trieste when in June 1920 he moved to Paris. In addition, it includes about a hundred items...which are not in the surviving collection but which he can be shown to have possessed or at least read during the same period. When the books are stamped 'J.J.', I have so indicated [with an asterisk]. This was the stamp which Joyce first used in Zurich and left behind him on his departure from Trieste in 1920.

"[Slocum and Cahoon] Books bearing Joyce's signature from his Dublin days, which are listed in John J. Slocum and Herbert Cahoon, A Bibliography of James Joyce, 1882-1941 (New Haven, 1953).
"[Curran] Books bearing Joyce's signature which are listed in C. P. Curran, James Joyce Remembered (London, 1968), p. 9 n., as in Curran's possession.
"[Critical Writings]. Books reviewed by Joyce, as indicated in The Critical Writings of James Joyce (London and New York, 1959).
"[James Joyce] Books mentioned in a bookseller's bill (1913-14) and in an inventory (1920) of part of Joyce's library, published in Richard Ellmann, James Joyce, ed. Ellsworth Mason and Richard Ellmann (London and New York, 1959).
"[Letters] Books which his letters speak of his reading of having read. See Letters of James Joyce, 3 vols (London and New York, 1957-1966).
"[Southern Illinois] Books in the Croessmann Collection, Southern Illinois University Library."
