"James Joyce is a fashionable writer and his last book, Finnegans Wake, is frequently named in awe and reverence by all kinds of literati. There is a great deal of bluff in this naming, for few prospective readers actually sustain their curiosity for more than a page or two. If they want to know more, they usually turn to guidebooks and commentaries, substituting printed doctrines for direct confrontation with Joyce's text. Finnegans Wake is seen distantly and from without, like a darkened powerhouse on the skyline."
